Facebook and Instagram Ad Image Sizes for Every Placement

Facebook and Instagram image ads need three shapes. The feeds take 4:5 at 1440 x 1800, Stories and Reels 9:16 at 1440 x 2560, and Marketplace 1:1 at 1080 x 1080. Every placement takes a JPG or PNG up to 30MB.1

Ad image sizes

In short

  • Feeds: 4:5, 1440 x 1800 pixels, on Facebook and Instagram.1
  • Stories and Reels: 9:16, 1440 x 2560, with the top 14%, bottom 35% and 6% of each side kept free of text.1
  • Marketplace and the right column: 1:1, at least 1080 x 1080.1
  • Text on the image: "There is no longer a limit on the amount of text", but one message still works best.2

What size should a Facebook ad image be?

It depends on where the ad shows. Meta's Ads Guide, read on 24 October 2026, gives these for image ads:1

Facebook Feed4:51440 x 180050 to 150 characters27 characters

What size should an Instagram ad image be?

The same ratios, by placement:1

Instagram Feed4:51440 x 1800125 characters
Instagram Explore home4:51440 x 1800125 characters
Instagram Stories9:161440 x 2560125 characters
Instagram Reels9:161440 x 256044 characters

An image in Instagram Stories is shown for "5-16 seconds", by the Ads Guide.1

Meta's pages differ on the Instagram Feed. The Ads Guide recommends 4:5; Meta's aspect ratio page says "1:1 is recommended for single-image ads to be delivered to Instagram Feed".13 Both shapes run there: "For Feed placements: Both 1:1 and 4:5 aspect ratios are supported".3

Meta image ad sizes by shape: 4:5 at 1440 x 1800 for the feeds, 9:16 at 1440 x 2560 for Stories and Reels, 1:1 at 1080 x 1080 for Marketplace, 1.91:1 to 1:1 for search, a 14, 35 and 6 per cent safe zone, and no text limit
Meta's image ad sizes by shape, from its Ads Guide image pages, read on 24 October 2026.

What is the safe zone for Stories and Reels?

The part of the frame the app's own buttons and name do not cover. For Stories and Reels, Meta says: "Consider leaving roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom, and 6% on each side of your asset free from text, logos, or other key creative elements".1

On a 1440 x 2560 image, that is about 360 pixels at the top, 900 at the bottom and 86 on each side. Put your headline, logo and button inside what is left.

How much text can a Facebook ad image have?

As much as you like, by the rule. Meta's image ad page says "There is no longer a limit on the amount of text".2 The old 20% rule is gone.

Less still reads better. Meta's advice is to "Use a modern, clean font" in a large size and a contrasting colour, and not to "communicate too many messages because ads usually only have one call to action".24

What happens if you upload only one shape?

Meta fills in the others. "If you don't provide all four aspect ratio variations, the system helps fill the gaps using adjustment options such as padding, media expansion, cropping and additional AI-enabled features."3

That can move your words out of frame or add parts you did not make. Make each shape yourself, and check every variation in Ads Manager before you publish.

Three image ads by Image V1: HUT's launch night as a square, HUT's opening week as a vertical, and Typally's fn key as a landscape
Three of Image V1's pictures, one in each shape it makes: 1:1, 9:16 and 16:9. Each is laid out for its frame, not cropped from another.

How do you make an image ad in every size?

Lay out each shape on its own, from the same idea:

  1. Write the idea and the words once: a short headline, one support line, one button.
  2. Lay out 9:16 first, with the safe zone kept clear.
  3. Lay out 4:5 or 1:1 for the feeds, with the hero bigger and the words shorter.
  4. Check each one at a third of its size. If a word is hard to read there, it is too small in the feed.

With 10xvid, Image V1 does this from your link. It reads your site and lays each shape out as a page from your own pictures, colours and type. Then it checks every word on the drawn picture.5 It makes 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9; it does not make 4:5, so the feeds take the 1:1.53

HUT's vertical image ad: Itaewon's new nightclub opens, four nights with their dates and prices, and an Enter the HUT button, under the club's own photo of masked dancers
HUT's opening week as a 9:16 image ad: the words sit inside the frame's middle, clear of the app's own buttons. Made by Image V1 from the club's link.

Where 10xvid fits

10xvid, motion graphics ads for apps, makes image ads with Image V1 as well as video ads. Each image is judged at 8 of 10 and made again under it. "It does not generate photos."5 Image ads come with every paid plan; Solo includes about 40 a month.6
