Facebook Ad Creative: What to Make, Test and Refresh

Facebook ad creative is the video, image and text of an ad. Meta's own advice comes down to four things: several ideas, the message in 3 seconds, a fair test, and a new idea when results slip.123

Facebook ad creative

In short

  • Make several ideas, not one. Meta's Performance 5 says to "Develop a variety of ad creatives" and let its AI match them to people.2
  • Open with the point. "Feature your brand and key message within the first 3 seconds."1
  • Test before you scale. An A/B test compares up to 5 versions, for 7 to 30 days, at no extra cost.45
  • Refresh with something new. A tired ad is replaced by one "materially different from the original creative".6

What counts as Facebook ad creative?

Everything a person sees in the ad: the video or image, the primary text above it, the headline and the description. Meta's text guidance is short: "The recommended text length for most placements is 125 characters for the Primary text field, 40 characters for the Headline field and 25 characters for the Description field."7

The media does most of the work. In a feed, the video is the part that stops someone or does not.

What makes a Facebook video ad work?

Meta's best practices for video ads give the same few rules on several pages:18

  1. The first seconds: "Feature your brand and key message within the first 3 seconds." And "Use motion or a compelling visual in the first frame to capture attention."
  2. Sound off: "Most users watch with sound off, so ensure your message is clear visually. Use subtitles, supers, and strong visuals." Another page puts it as "Design video for sound off but delight with sound on".
  3. Vertical: "We recommend clients use 9:16 vertical video in Instagram and Facebook Reels."9
  4. Short: "shorter videos (under 15 seconds) tend to perform best in feed".

Meta's pages give different ideal lengths: under 15 seconds on one, 15 seconds or less on another, 5 to 10 seconds on a third.1810 All of them are short, so make a 15 second version first.

How many creatives should you run?

More than one, and each one different. Meta's video ad page says: "Start with up to 10 creatives per ad set, then keep the top 5 as evergreen." It adds: "Mix video and static ads for better performance and to reduce creative fatigue."1

Volume has a limit. Meta's page on ad volume warns that "too many ads can result in worse performance". One ad can hold up to 10 creative assets instead.11 For apps, Advantage+ app campaigns take up to 50 images or videos at a time.3

Different means a different idea, not a new colour. The three Typally ads above each open on another reason to care: speed, the mess of speaking, and where it works.

How do you test Facebook ad creative?

Meta has two tools for it:

  • A/B test: "An A/B test enables you to compare up to 5 versions of an ad", and "A winning ad is determined based on the version that has the lowest cost per result."4 Meta recommends "a minimum of 7-day tests. A/B tests can only be run for a maximum of 30 days".5 "There is no additional cost to create a test."4
  • Creative test: "In a creative test, you can compare up to 7 creative variants with delivery provided to new test ads."12 It is "supported in campaigns using the Highest volume bid strategy only", and Meta suggests "no more than 20% of your existing budget".

Two rules from Meta keep a test fair. Give each version the same budget. And "We do not recommend testing informally, such as by turning ad sets or campaigns on and off manually."13

Meta's own pages differ on length: one says 7 days at least, another "Run your A/B test for at least two weeks."514 Run it long enough that each version has results.

When should you refresh your ad creative?

When Meta tells you, or before. Ads Manager marks an ad "Creative limited" or "Creative fatigue" when its cost per result climbs past what your past ads cost. Its fix is a new ad "materially different from the original creative".6 For app campaigns, Meta's line is "We recommend changing your ad creative 2-4 times per month to sustain performance."3

For the statuses in full, see creative fatigue: how to spot it and make the next ad.

The blueprint, recorded in the app. Change the hook, and the next version follows from the same plan.

What do Advantage+ creative enhancements change?

They let Meta adjust your media and text to fit each placement and person. For video, Meta lists effects, subtitles, a sticker call to action and voice translations. Its "Video touch-ups" can crop a video or use generative AI to expand it: "Expansion can transform up to the first 15 seconds of your video."15

Most can be switched off: "Some enhancements may be turned on by default, but you can turn them off at any time."15 Not all: for Reels, "Advertisers cannot opt in or out of these basic enhancements."9 Check the preview before you publish, so the ad still shows your real product.

How do you make enough creative without a studio?

Plan each idea as a sentence first: who it is for, the first line, the proof screen, the ask. Then make it in each shape.

With 10xvid, paste your App Store link or your website into the chat. It reads the page and writes a blueprint of the ad: who it is for, the story in order, why they act, how it looks. When one ad tires, change its hook on the blueprint, and the next film follows from the same plan, in 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9.16

One of the three Typally ideas as a film: 15 seconds, 9:16, every word set as type, so it reads with the sound off. It plays muted here.

Where 10xvid fits

10xvid, motion graphics ads for apps, makes the different ideas a campaign needs, each from your real screens and type. Every film is read frame by frame and judged at 8 of 10 before you see it.16 Motion V1 Flash makes a flat motion graphics film in about five minutes, so a new idea for next week's test costs little time.16
