Creative Testing: How to Test Video Ads for Your App
Creative testing runs two or more ads against each other, on the same budget and audience, and keeps the one that costs least per result. Every big network has a tool for it, and most want at least 7 days. A test is only as good as the ads you feed it. These are the networks' own help pages, read on 26 October 2026.123
Creative testingIn short
- Change one thing: TikTok: "You can only select one variable for each split test."4
- How long: 7 to 30 days on Meta and TikTok; 2 weeks to 90 days on LinkedIn.256
- How many: Meta's creative test takes up to 7 ads, Google's app tests up to 20 videos, Snapchat's up to 5.789
- The winner: the lowest cost per result. TikTok names one only at 90% confidence.103
- The fuel: new ads, "materially different" when the old ones tire, in Meta's words.11
What is creative testing?
A fair race between ads. Meta's A/B test shows "each version to a segment of your audience and ensure nobody sees both, then determine which version performs best."1
It is not switching ads on and off by hand. Meta: "We do not recommend testing informally, such as by turning ad sets or campaigns on and off manually."1 The tools split the audience, so one ad is not judged on Monday and the other on Friday.
How does each network test video ads?
Each has its own tool and its own limits:

- Meta: the A/B test can "compare up to 5 versions of an ad".10 The creative test runs inside a live campaign: "You can create 2 to 7 copies."7
- Google: for apps, "up to 20 videos tested head-to-head". "Directional experiments are currently available for Android campaigns only", in video-only install campaigns.8
- TikTok: Split Test compares two versions, one variable at a time. The opening "2-3 seconds" of a video are a variable of their own.34
- LinkedIn: two ad sets that differ by one variable, the ad among them.6
- Snapchat: a creative split test takes up to 5 ads, at least two.9
- Apple: the store page, not the ad. "Test up to three alternate product page versions against your original".12
How long should a creative test run?
A week at least, on the networks that say:

- Meta: "A/B tests can only be run for a maximum of 30 days, but tests shorter than 7 days may produce inconclusive results."2
- TikTok: "We recommend testing for a minimum of 7 days to obtain the most reliable results."5 After an edit, 7 more days and more budget.13
- LinkedIn: "An A/B test needs to run for a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 90 days."6
- Google, app directional tests: 14 days by default, with "no strict recommendations for test duration or budget".14
Once it runs, leave it. On Meta, you "won't be able to make any changes to the variable" anyway.15
How much budget does a test need?
Enough to give each ad a fair read:
- Meta: the same budget for both versions. For a creative test, "no more than 20% of your existing budget".17
- TikTok: "We recommend a budget that gives you a power value of at least 80%." The tool estimates that power from your budget.5
- LinkedIn: at least $700 for the test, or $20 a day.16
- Snapchat: "A winner will only be determined once each arm of the Split Test has reached at least $10 spent."17
How is a winner picked?
By cost per result, and on most networks a confidence level:
- Meta: the lowest cost per result wins. Meta "simulates possible outcomes tens of thousands of times" to put a confidence on it. In its creative test, "A confidence level is not included."187
- TikTok: a winner only "with a 90% confidence rate", and only if the result is statistically significant.3
- LinkedIn: 10 percent significance, meaning "the same winner would be picked in 90 of those tests".16
- Snapchat: above 80% confidence is strong evidence of a winner.19
- Google, Demand Gen: 70% by default; "95%: Conclusive results".20
How many ads do you need?
More than one round's worth. The networks ask for a steady supply:
- Meta, Instagram video: "Start with up to 10 creatives per ad set, then keep the top 5 as evergreen. Run tests for at least 4 days for reliable results."21
- Meta, app campaigns: "We recommend changing your ad creative 2-4 times per month to sustain performance."22
- TikTok: "between 2 to 5 ads per ad group", updated "on a monthly basis at a minimum, but ideally every one to two weeks".23
- TikTok, on the ads themselves: "it is always better to use creatives with big differences, especially when testing."24
Two to five ads, renewed every one to two weeks, is roughly 4 to 20 new ads a month for one ad group. And when an ad tires, Meta says so: at twice the cost per result of your past ads, the ad shows "Creative fatigue". Its fix is a new ad "materially different from the original creative".11
How do you run your first creative test?
Six steps, in order:
- Pick one variable. For video ads, start with the hook: same middle, same end, a different first second. See video ad hooks.
- Make the versions really different. Not a new colour on the same line.
- Use the network's own tool, not ads switched on and off by hand.
- Give it 7 days or more, and the budget the tool asks for.
- Judge on cost per result, at the confidence the network reports.
- Keep the winner, replace the loser, and test again.
What you pay per install comes down to which ad wins. See cost per install.
Where 10xvid fits
10xvid, motion graphics ads for apps, makes the versions you test. Paste your App Store link or website into the chat. It draws the ads from your real app screens, in 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9. On the blueprint you change one part, such as the hook, and the next film follows. Motion V1 "keeps your next ad unlike your last three".25
Solo is about 30 video ads a month for $79.26 The first ad is free, with no card: make your first ad.
