Video Ad Hooks: The First Second of an App Ad, Explained

A video ad hook is the first line of the ad: the words and picture on screen in its first second. It decides whether anyone sees the rest. TikTok says "90% of ad recall impact is captured within the first six seconds", and every network asks for the point within its first few seconds.123

Video ad hooks

In short

  • Timing: TikTok wants the offer in 3 seconds and the hook in 6. Meta wants the key message in 3, and Snapchat a "Hero" message in the opening frame.234
  • Kinds: ten real examples below, from one word to a doubt, a question, a claim or a wish.
  • About the viewer: a hook names their want, their doubt or their problem, not your logo. TikTok: "Skip long intros or logo animations."5
  • Proved next: the second after the hook shows the app doing what the hook said.

What is a video ad hook?

The opening frame and the line on it. In a feed, it is the only part everyone sees, so it carries the whole ad's promise in a few words. Meta's advice: "Use motion or a compelling visual in the first frame to capture attention."3

A hook is not a slogan. It is about the viewer, and the next seconds prove it.

When does each network want the hook?

Early, on all of them, but not equally early:

When each network wants the hook: TikTok and Meta by 3 seconds, Snapchat in the first frame, Google in 5 to 10 seconds, LinkedIn by 10 seconds, and 90% of TikTok ad recall impact within six seconds
Each network's own timing for the hook, from their own pages, read on 23 and 25 October 2026.
  • TikTok: "Introduce your content proposition in the first 3 seconds" and "Prioritize your hook in the first 6 seconds".2
  • Meta: "Feature your brand and key message within the first 3 seconds."3
  • Snapchat: a "Hero" message in the opening frame, and "avoid opening on a solid frame with a logo or product shot only".4
  • Google: "Captivate people in the first 5-10 seconds of the ad with a problem statement and show how your product or service solves it."6
  • LinkedIn: "Show the most impactful content in the first 10 seconds of your video".7

Write for the strictest: a hook that works in the first second works on every network.

What kinds of hooks are there?

Here are ten, each the opening frame of an ad 10xvid made:

Ten hooks, ten kinds: one word, a doubt, a claim, a question, a point, a problem, a promise, the mess, a count and a wish, each the first frame of an ad 10xvid made
The first frame of ten ads 10xvid made, named for what the first line does. Typally, Perla and Agent Games are apps made by 10xvid's founder.
  1. One word. "Talk", over the key you hold to speak. The shortest hook there is, and the whole idea.
  2. A doubt. "Generic affirmations", over a wall of identical lines. It voices what the viewer already suspects.
  3. A claim. "AI wrote this shooter", over the game itself. Surprising, and proved at once on screen.
  4. A question. "Which one to buy?", in Lithuanian, over a wall of products. The viewer's own question.
  5. A point. "Your ad should look like your app." A belief stated flatly.
  6. A problem. "Your manifestation ritual shouldn't need ten apps." The pain, then the answer.
  7. A promise. "You think faster than you type." What changes for the viewer.
  8. The mess. "Ramble, ums and all", over a sentence with its ums marked. The before, shown.
  9. A count. A wall of the games themselves under "Every game here". The size of the thing.
  10. A wish. "Your dream life, in your own voice." What the viewer wants, in their words.

How do you write a hook for your app?

Start from the viewer, then cut:

  1. Write what the viewer wants, fears or asks, in their words, as a full sentence.
  2. Cut it to the fewest words that still say it. "Talk" says what a paragraph about voice typing says.
  3. Put it over a picture that agrees with it: the key, the wall of products, the game.
  4. Check the next second proves it. A claim the app does not prove at once reads as a trick.
  5. Read it with the sound off. If the words are not on screen, there is no hook in a muted feed.

TikTok's own structure puts it first: "Have a hook, highlight your unique selling points, and end with a clear call-to-action."2

What does a hook look like inside a whole ad?

Here is the claim hook from the picture above, played out. The first line makes a claim, and the next fifteen seconds prove it:

An ad 10xvid made for Agent Games: the claim in the first frame, the proof after it. 15 seconds, 9:16. It plays muted here.

How do you test more than one hook?

Make one ad per hook, with the same middle and end, and let them run against each other. Meta's A/B test compares "up to 5 versions of an ad", and its creative test up to 7.89

With 10xvid, the hook is one part of the ad's blueprint. Paste your App Store link or website into the chat; it reads your site and writes the blueprint. Change the hook on it, and the next film follows from the same plan, in 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9.10

The blueprint, recorded in the app. The hook is changed, and the ad's plan follows.

Where 10xvid fits

10xvid, motion graphics ads for apps, writes the hook from your own site. It sets it as type in the first second, over your real screens. Motion V1 reads each film frame by frame and judges it at 8 of 10, the hook included, before you see it.10

The first ad is free, with no card: make your first ad. For the whole script around the hook, see how to write a video ad script.

Questions about video ad hooks

How long should a video ad hook be?

A second or two on screen, a few words long. TikTok wants the offer within 3 seconds and the hook within 6.2

What makes a good hook for an app ad?

A line about the viewer, set over a picture that agrees with it, and proved by the app in the next seconds.

Not alone. Snapchat advises against opening on a logo only, and TikTok says to skip logo intros.45

How many hooks should I test?

As many as you can make well. Meta's A/B test takes up to 5 versions and its creative test up to 7.89
